Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea, ready to add to their winger ranks by signing Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho on loan with an obligation to buy. But Enzo Marisca’s hopes of bringing in the striker were scuppered by the club’s failure to prize Victor Osiemah away from Napoli.

After another fateful transfer window at Chelsea, the club finally managed to find a new home for Sterling. Arsenal have emerged as the main suitors for the 29-year-old winger, whose hopes of a move have been complicated by his £325,000-a-week contract, and are working to finalize a season-long loan deal as the deal ends. The line was getting closer. There are no loan fees involved.

Talks with Chelsea intensified on Friday evening and Sterling agreed to join Mikel Arteta. Arsenal were looking to bolster their title challenge by adding depth to their attack.

Sterling has fallen out of favor with Chelsea and is told he has no place in Mariska’s plans. He has been cut from the first-team squad and has been told he will not play a single minute for Mariska, who have said they prefer a variety of wingers.

Chelsea have plenty of options in wide areas, raising the question of whether they have room for Sancho in their squad. The former Borussia Dortmund winger is not in Erik ten Hague’s plans and was determined to join Chelsea. The deal will become permanent at the end of the season for around £25m. Sancho was set to become the 13th player to join Chelsea this summer, who are believed to have agreed to cover most of his salary.

Chelsea have increased their attacking midfield options by signing Pedro Neto and Joao Felix. Mariska was already able to choose from Cole Palmer, Noni Maduke, Christopher Nkunko and Mykhailo Mudrac.

There was still a desire to bring Nicholas Jackson into the top 9 to compete. Chelsea officials spent all day trying to sign Ousemah but could not convince him to fit into their wage structure. Osimhan had already seen the move to Al-Ahly. It remains to be seen if he joins the Saudi Pro League before the transfer window closes next week.

Chelsea have been left with 18-year-old Mark Gave as Jackson’s deputy. They also considered Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Aston Villa’s John Durán and Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who are all set to join Al Ahli for £40m.

Much of the focus at Stamford Bridge was on moving unwanted players. Centre-back Travo Chalobah, 25, was set to join Crystal Palace on loan and goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic moved to Strasbourg on loan. Everton made a late move to sign Armando Bruja on loan after a deal with an option to buy followed the striker’s proposed move to Ipswich.

The midfielder was the subject of interest from West Ham and Manchester United. Ben Chilwell, the England left-back, was also unable to get a move.

Sterling’s impending arrival at Arsenal allowed Eddie Nketiah to complete his move to Crystal Palace for an initial £25m, with an additional £5m potentially due. The England striker has been tracked by Palace for several years and was keen on a move to Selhurst Park after rejecting Nottingham Forest earlier in the window.

His departure means Arsenal could recoup around £90m this window, having sold Emile Smith-Rowe to Fulham and Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for an initial £18m on deadline day. Reece Nelson was hoping to seal a season-long loan to Fulham after rejecting Ipswich.

Arsenal signed Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto to replace Ramsdale but Arteta had earlier revealed that Spain midfielder Mikel Merino strained his shoulder in his first training session on Thursday and will be out for a few weeks. will be out. Sterling will not be available for Saturday’s game against Brighton but will add invaluable experience if available. He is expected to compete with Gabriel Martinelli for a place on the left side of Arteta’s attack but could also provide cover for centre-forward Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka on the right.

Nketiah’s arrival at Palace follows the addition of centre-back Maxine Lacroix from Wolfsburg. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone left Selhurst Park for Wolves, who signed defensive midfielder Andre from Brazilian club Fluminense for £21m. Leicester have taken striker Odense Edward on loan from Palace.
